Sonntagszopf

I wasn’t sure if I should write this post in English or German. “Sonntagszopf” literally translated means “sunday braid”. It is a type of bread also known as “Zopf” and it seems there is an English translation of the Wikipedia entry.

First you have to know, that I never have baked a bread. That is until last Sunday. Last Sunday I decided, as the the tradition intents, I backed a “Sonntagszopf”. At home I do lot of cooking, but not baking. To me baking is not cooking and vice-versa.

Baking is mixing a bunch of ingredients and then hope for the best. While in cooking you can control the entire process. I like to explore new recipes and cook according to the instructions. Not much freestyle going on here.

Preparing the bread felt quite easy. The “Zopf” is done with very buttery dough. This also preserves the bread and ensures it stays soft. But enough task, the thing that left the oven after 35min is this:

Edit: I totally forget to mention the most important thing: The flour. No bread without flour and for this dough I used flour that is milled just next door at the corn mill Sachseln.
